Numbers 13: Mission Impossible

Greetings, Agents Shammua, Shaphat, Caleb, Igal, Hoshea, Palti, Gaddiel, Gaddi, Ammiel, Sethur, Nahbi, and Geuel.

You are probably wondering why you are here.

Each of you, a leader in your tribe, has been hand-selected to carry out a top secret mission of the utmost importance. The fate of our entire people hangs in the balance.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do some recon in land of Canaan and give a report to me, Moses, Aaron, and the people. Here is the type of information we are looking for:

  • What the land is like: rich or poor, trees or no trees.
  • What the people are like: strong or weak, many or few.
  • What the cities and towns are like: unwalled or fortified.

As a side objective, bring back some of the fruit from that land. It is the right season so there should be plenty of grapes on the vine.

I don’t think I need to tell you all the importance of this mission. I would tell you more but you are on a need to know basis and quite frankly, you don’t need to know.

This message will self-destruct in five seconds.

40 Days Later

Report on Recon Mission N13
By: Shaphat son of Hori of the tribe of Simeon.

To Moses, Aaron, and the people.

Range: Our recon in Canaan went from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. Our scouts went up through the Negeb and  Hebron.

The grapes you have were from the Valley of Eshcol.

Land: It is a good land, flowing with milk and honey. The grapes are enormous.

People: We discovered many people who already inhabit the land including, but not limited to:

  • Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.
  • Amalekites
  • Hittites
  • Jebusites
  • Amorites
  • Canaanites (between the Jordan and the sea.)

We also encountered Nephilim. They were giants.
The people were strong and we were like grasshoppers to them.

Cities: Large and fortified.

Prognosis: It is my professional opinion that we should not plan or execute any attack on the people of this land. We will surely be destroyed.

A Second Opinion

An alternate analysis of data gained during the 40-day expedition to Canaan
By: Caleb son of Jephunneh of the tribe of Judah

Prognosis: Occupy Canaan. That is all. Don’t listen to that fool!
